Welp, here I am. Living on Capitol Hill (but I wish my name were Bill cause then naming this blog would be a whole lot easier). Right now, I’m living with my aunt and uncle and a lovable Welsh terrier named Baz, looking for a job.
The past seven days have been spent exploring and applying for jobs, sometimes in desperation and sometimes in genuine interest. I’ve walked a lot, realized I don’t have the right legs for running (sorry Jon) and learned to stock up on wine at the grocery store instead of a bodega.
And one thing, after a week here, that I can say for certain is that I love the food. All the food. Foodies rejoice with me please. Maybe it’s just that my palate has grown more adventuresome since I was a 13-year-old who would only eat mozzarella sticks, but I think it’s really that I have so many more options here. On Sunday, I had quite possibly the best quiche of my life at brunch at a French restaurant at the Eastern Market called Montmartre. It was seemingly just a quiche Lorraine, but with caramelized onions and perfectly mixed eggs and cheese and ham, with a salad only to be replicated at a French cafe. It was one of the most authentically French restaurants I’ve found since coming back from Paris, so it was a welcome meal in my book. But, home is where the appetite is, I guess. Actually, that’s pretty accurate.
I’ve also been out on U Street in my week here with some friends from UMW. The last time I was on U Street was in 2001 to go shopping and to Ben’s Chili Bowl with one of my friends and her dad, so things sure had changed when I got off the metro at 10 p.m. to go to the bars there. And either I was on a completely different section of U Street, or it’s changed a lot in the past 10 years (I still don’t know the answer to that). Either way, every nightly adventure gets me more acclimated to the metro, a navigation skill which has oddly enough carried over from Paris…it’s just a different map to study.
Tomorrow I’m going to turn in another job application and stalk the Internet for more opportunities…if you hear of anything, let me know, ok? (I’m serious.)
