I’m going to take a brief pause from all my Italy travels to come back to France for a second. Though I still have Venice pictures to share – lots of them! – Aix is beautiful yet windy right now and I just couldn’t help feeling the need to share today while I was at the market.
I fell in love with Aix at a market, and I fall more and more every time I go shopping. Markets in Aix happen every day, but the best ones are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Farmers and vendors flood the city with booths of honey and nougat, fruits and vegetables, rotisserie chickens and saucissons. For the bigger market days, there are stands of lavender and fabrics and anything else you could ever imagine.
The sky here is the bluest I’ve ever seen in recent days, prompting several picnics in the park with tarte tropeziennes and rosé despite the ruthless mistral. It’s so hard to believe that it was just a little more than a year ago that I found out I would be moving back to France – something I had wanted my whole life. Life in Provence is incredibly – wonderfully – different from life in DC, from the pace of life (“profiter” truly doesn’t translate well) to the food to the curved orange tiles on the roofs of every building. Once you get around all the bureaucracy, it really, really is worth it – and it just goes to show, if you can find a home in a foreign country, you can do anything. I’ll leave the rest to Hemingway:
When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.
Now allez, prenez un café, profitez. ♦
